Regular seeds are the basis of all cannabis varieties known today. Despite the success of feminized seeds, which took over the seed market almost a couple of decades ago, many growers still prefer regular strains for several reasons, such as originality of genetics, quality or breeding purposes.
The origins of most feminized seeds marketed today come from señlections of regular seeds made at the end of the past century, which were then used to make the first feminized cannabis hybrids. Philosopher Seeds want to honour these strains with our new Regular Line, a collection of regular seeds that we present you in this article fith the first inclusion, Jamaican Blueberry BX. We'll soon add new and amazing regular strains in this Line, so stay tuned!
Origins of regular seeds
Until the early 2.000,s all known cannabis strains were regular, that is to say, you could find males, females (dioecious plants) and hermaphrodite plants (monoecious plants). These three plant genders occurred naturally in the diverse cannabis plants of each area where they were native, with a very high ratio of monoecious plants (these don't need any other plant to produce offspring, as happens with males and females).
During the second half of the XX century, some western cannabis breeders collected seeds from across the planet and started an amazing project: first, to depurate and stabilize these genetics. Second, to develop the first hybrids of narcotic cannabis by crossing these genetics with each other. Modern cannabis breeding was born, which used the same rules than those used for breeding any other type of plant or vegetable. The quality of the first strains offered by the pioneer seed companies was much higher than that known until that date, so soon these first hybrids became the most popular cultivars among both commercial and homegrowers.
From that moment, a large number of elite clones from regular seeds were used to develop the first feminized seeds, which soon became the most demanded type of cannabis seed on the market. A few years later similar circumstances caused the creation of the first automatic cannabis strains.
Regular Line by Philosopher Seeds
We've created the new Regular Line as a tribute to the pioneer breeders who developed the first cannabis hybrids and adapted them to indoor cultivation with artificial lighting. We're aware that many lovers of regular strains are not attracted by modern commercial feminized hybrids, so we've carefully planned this breeding project with unique, special and original genetics.
As mentioned above, the first strain to be included in our Regular Line is Jamaican Blueberry BX, a backcros of the popular clone selected in Spain by Marleys around 10 years ago. At that time, he was user of a popular Spanish forum and shared the plant with a few lucky growers. We are sure that the quality of this strain will meet the demands of the most discerning farmers, so we can't wait for you guys to grow it, enjoy her delicious flavor and energizing effect and tell us your experience with this unique plant. We'll be soon adding new and awesome genetics to our Regular Line!
Jamaican Blueberry BX, first regular strain by Philosopehr Seeds
We wanted to inaugurate our Regular Line with a truly special plant, which represented what regular strains have meant for cannabis breeding. Our partners from Old School Genetics proposed this amazing plant, which we felt in love with since the very first moment. This plant was found in 2005 by Marleys in a pack of seeds from Cannabiogen's Jamaican Blueberry. He kept the clone and shared with his closest friends for years, until sharing it with us for thi breeding project.
This clone was a perfect representation of the main features of this strain: high yield, vigorous growth, branched structure, unique earthy and fruity smell and taste and of course the wonderful colours at the end of the bloom stage. Our aim was then to offer all this traits in seed form, something difficult for us since we didn't have a Jamaican Blueberry male to cross it with our female. We decided to make a backcross of the original clone to fix as many traits as possible.
Marley's Jamaican Blueberry was then crossed with an splendid Socaldawg male which we've been keeping for years in our vault. Then we made a vast selection of the offspring to find a new male with as many common traits with the Jamaican as possible. Once found, we used it to pollinate the original clone again, thus obtaining the first filial generation of the backcross, Jamaican Blueberry BX.
She grows vigorous and well branched, which improves the overall yield. One of the main characteristics of this Sativa plant is her early flowering, being ready to harvest in just 9-10 weeks indoors, by early September if grown outdoors, where we'll doubtless get the most out of it. It is then harvested before the feared autumn rains come, thus avoiding issues with molds. Another interesting trait of Jamaican Blueberry BX is her high terpene content even if harvested before time, something especially usefull in certain circumstances.
